A powerful and fiesty defender, Florian Jungwirth joined Whitecaps FC via trade from San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for $200,000 in General Allocation Money in August 2021.

WHITECAPS FC

'21: Having joined mid-season from San Jose Earthquakes, Jungwirth added a strong presence to the ‘Caps backline. The German also showed his ability to play out from the back, as he finished the regular season with the best passing accuracy amongst players with more than 100 passes on the team with 87.17%. Jungwirth made 14 starts and 16 appearances for the ‘Caps in all competitions in 2021 and added a goal in his first MLS start for the club in an August 29 4-1 win against Real Salt Lake. Prior to joining the ‘Caps, Jungwirth started 13 of his 14 appearances for San Jose during the regular season, tallying one assist and helping keep two clean sheets.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES

'17-'21: Jungwirth started 120 of his 126 MLS appearances, including playoffs, for the Earthquakes and was honoured as the club’s top defensive player in 2017 and 2019.

BEFORE MLS

'08-'17: Prior to his move to MLS, Jungwirth spent the first nine years of his professional career in his native country of Germany. He was named to 1860 Munich’s first team in 2008 after initially joining the club’s youth system in 2000. He also had stints with Dynamo Dresden, VfL Bochum, and finally Darmstadt 98, where he made 35 total appearances in two Bundesliga seasons prior to his departure for MLS.

INTERNATIONAL

Jungwirth represented Germany at the youth levels and was the captain of the national side that won the 2008 UEFA U-19 Championship.
