Charleston Battery continued their winning ways to remain top of the United Soccer Leagues First Division during the latest weekend of action.
Carolina RailHawks are the only undefeated side left in USL-1 after Portland Timbers fell to defeat on Saturday, while Rochester Rhinos are still to record their win of 2008, despite claiming a point this weekend.
The action started Friday, with Interstate 5 rivals Seattle Sounders making their only regular season trip to Swangard Stadium for a Cascadia Cup clash with Vancouver Whitecaps. Quick goals by Josh Gardner and Sebastien Le Toux gave the defending USL-1 champions a 2-0 victory over their Canadian hosts.
There were four games on Saturday, with Charleston claiming goals from Randi Patterson and Aaron King in a 2-0 Southern Derby win over Atlanta Silverbacks. Meanwhile, Carolina looked on course for three home points against Rochester after Martin Nunez gave the RailHawks the lead, but a late Mauricio Salles equalizer earned Darren Tilley's Rhinos a point at WakeMed Soccer Park.
Minnesota Thunder got first-half goals from Melvin Tarley, Jeremiah Bass, and Ricardo Sanchez to defeat Miami FC Blues 3-1 at the National Sports Center in Blaine, while Vicente Arze got his first-ever goal as a Vancouver Whitecaps player, as Teitur Thordarson's side redeemed themselves from Friday's poor home performance to Seattle with an important 1-0 away win in Portland.
It proved to be a miserable Memorial Day long weekend for the Timbers, as head coach Gavin Wilkinson and striker Takayuki Suzuki were both sent off in the first half of Monday's 2-0 home defeat to Miami.
