The Vancouver Whitecaps continued an impressive rise to the top of the USL First Division table with two wins on the week, giving them three consecutive on the road. Since falling at home 2-0 to the defending champion Sounders May 23, the Whitecaps have proceeded to shutout their hosts in three straight with a win at Portland May 24 to start the run. They kept things rolling with a 2-0 victory in Charleston Wednesday and a 1-0 win at Minnesota Saturday.
Jason Jordan opened the scoring in Charleston nine minutes in against the Battery. Lyle Martin evaded Mike Richardson's challenge and slipped a ball into the near post to forward Jason Jordan, who finished with a neat first-time shot.
Vancouver put the game beyond doubt in the 75th minute with a good finish from Nicholas Addlery. Addlery was played in behind from the right-side, he carried the ball into the box, rounded Keith Wiggans and finished neatly with a right-footed strike.
On Saturday, it was Jordan, the 2005 league MVP, rising to the role of hero again with the lone strike of the game in the 41st minute, tapping in a dangerous cross from Eduardo Sebrango to move the Whitecaps into first place despite scoring only seven goals in their nine matches. Jay Nolly posted his third consecutive shutout for Vancouver, who has not allowed a goal in its five road matches on the season.
