VANCOUVER —
Substitute strike Charles Gbeke scored in the 84th minute as the Vancouver Whitecaps salvaged a 1-1 tie with the Charleston Battery in United Soccer League action Wednesday.

Gbeke headed the ball past Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock from close range. Hudock got a hand on the ball but could not prevent it from spinning over the line.

Randi Patterson opened the scoring for the Battery in the 19th minute with his league-leading eighth goal of the season.

Vancouver almost tied it in the 45th minute after Justin Moose won a free-kick twenty-five yards out. Moose played the ball in, but forward Eduardo Sebrango's header bounced back of the right-hand goal-post.

Charleston (9-4-4) remained in first place in the USL First Division. Vancouver (7-4-4) moved past Rochester into third.
