The Vancouver Whitecaps are back in the hunt for the Nutrilite Canadian Championship after stealing a 2-0 win over the host Montreal Impact yesterday.
- STANDINGS:
The 1-1 Whitecaps trail 2-0 Toronto FC halfway through the three-team tournament to represent Canada in the CONCACAF Champions League. Defending Canadian champion Montreal is 0-2 and on the cusp of elimination.
- EARLY WINNER:
Vancouver's Marcus Haber scored just 30 seconds after kickoff when he exploited unprepared goalkeeper Matt Jordan.
- HOMETOWN BOY:
Former Montrealer Charles Gbeke scored a header by the back post to double the Caps' lead in the 16th minute.
- OOH-LA-LA:
A female fan invaded the field and tried to doff her top in the 28th minute. A male security guard stopped her in the act.
- THRICE DENIED:
Three times in five minutes the Impact beat Caps' 'keeper Jay Nolly, only to be denied by the crossbar. Ex-Cap Joey Gjertsen's shot ricocheted to Roberto Brown whose header connected with the bar in the 31st minute. Five minutes later, Rocco Placentino's 35-yard blast met the same fate.
