Showcase to include GMSL Selects

Vancouver Whitecaps FC continued the development of their partnership with the Girls Metro Soccer League (GMSL) by announcing today the support and creation of six GMSL girls select teams that will participate in the first annual Whitecaps West Coast College Showcase at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, BC, this March.

The GMSL will be providing an opportunity for individual GMSL players to sign up and be part of one of three teams’ ages. The Whitecaps will supply the coaching staff to lead the GMSL select teams in the Showcase, which takes place from March 6 to 8.

"We decided to replace our annual GMSL Showcase, in order to support this Whitecaps Showcase opportunity, as part of our ongoing partnership,” said GMSL vice-chairman Steve Allen. "We feel that working with the Whitecaps, we can enhance more opportunities for individual GMSL players to take part in the Showcase.

"We’re pleased to work with the GMSL in creating these Showcase select teams," said Whitecaps managing director of professional development Chris Murphy. “Our staff are looking forward to getting the players into teams and ready for a memorable showcase experience."

In 2009, the Whitecaps supported the GMSL College Recruiting program by providing staff to coach and scout the players during the event. In addition, the Whitecaps and GMSL partnership included the Whitecaps Women’s soccer series, which took three of the Whitecaps W-League regular season stand-alone matches out to the local pitches of Lower Mainland communities.

The Whitecaps West Coast College Showcase provides a unique opportunity for U-15 to U-18 players to demonstrate their talents to a large audience of college and university coaches and scouts. Off the field, players will gain an advantage by learning about college recruitment, scholarships, as well as entrance requirements and processes. The Showcase takes place at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, BC, with the girls weekend set for March 6 to 8, 2010, while a boys showcase weekend will take place in 2011.
