Whitecaps wrap up 2010 Showcase

The inaugural Whitecaps West Coast College Showcase for girls wrapped up this past weekend, with some of Western Canada's top teams competing at Newton Athletic Park in Surrey, BC.

Some of the top girls clubs from British Columbia and Alberta took part in over 62 matches over the weekend. Alberta-based teams included three Edmonton clubs in West Raiders, Sherwood Park Phoenix, and St Francis Xavier, while the city of Calgary was represented by NSD Fusion and Calgary Foothills United.

BC Interior clubs that took part included two Thompson Okanagan Youth Soccer League (TOYSL) select teams and Kamloops Blaze. Vancouver Island clubs UVI United (Upper Vancouver Island) and Victoria Capitals also took part.

Lower Mainland clubs that took part included Coquitlam Metro-Ford, Langley Mustangs, North Shore United, and Guildford Athletic Club/Surrey United, as well as Vancouver Chaos, Vancouver Phoenix, Vancouver Selects, and Vancouver United. The Girls Metro Soccer League (GMSL) also sent three select teams to the event.

The Whitecaps West Coast College Showcase provided an opportunity for U-15 to U-18 players to demonstrate their talents to a large audience of college and university coaches and scouts, as well as Whitecaps staff. Off the field, players took part in workshops on college recruitment, scholarships, as well as entrance requirements and processes. Each player left with a college bound workbook, while participating college and university coaches received a coach's workbook profiling every team and athlete.

On Saturday evening, the Whitecaps hosted all participating teams, staff, and college/university coaches for special presentations from some of North America's top college and university coaches. They included representatives from Duke University, University of North Carolina, University of Notre Dame, Santa Clara University, as well as other local universities.
The Whitecaps West Coast College Showcase will announce 2011 dates for both girls and boys showcases in the near future.
