For the better part of the past 25 years, Paul Dolan (@DolieTheGoalie) has been attached to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in one way or another. Today, that connection continued as he was named the new analyst for all of Sportsnet’s 2012 Whitecaps FC telecasts.
“I’m very excited, it’s a huge opportunity with a station committed to Whitecaps FC and to the sport of soccer,” Dolan told whitecapsfc.com.
A Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, Dolan spent last season colour commentating Whitecaps FC matches alongside Peter Schaad (@PeteSchaad) on TEAM 1410 radio.
“I’ve loved working with Peter and everyone at the TEAM 1410,” said Dolan. “I hope to continue to do some things on the radio as well.”
With a voice as distinct as any, 'Dolie the Goalie' - as he is affectionately known - is a pleasure to listen to. His commentary is poignant, and his soccer knowledge as wide as his wingspan. His time as an analyst also includes CBC’s soccer broadcasts. Now, he gets his mug back on the television screen, combining with play-by-play man Craig MacEwen to bring informative analysis and opinion on ‘Caps matches. Sportsnet will announce its complete broadcast schedule for the 2012 Whitecaps FC campaign in the coming weeks.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Craig and the rest of the crew,” added Dolan. “Craig is a soccer guy as well and he knows the game inside and out, so I’m looking forward to bouncing things back and forth with him.”
Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Dolan has seen some of this country’s greatest success. Only a select few soccer players in Canada can say that they’ve played at a FIFA World Cup, and only two goalkeepers, but Dolan did just that. In 1986, he was the youngest goalkeeper to play in a World Cup match when Canada played France in Mexico. In Vancouver, meanwhile, Dolan played 10 seasons with Whitecaps FC (then known as the 86ers) and is the club’s all-time leader in goalkeeping appearances (223) and victories (126).
Catch up with Sportsnet’s newest analyst today, as he continues his ‘Keeper’s Corner segment every Friday with former announcing partner Peter Schaad on Whitecaps FC Daily (@WFCDaily), 3 p.m. PT, on TEAM 1410 radio.
