Six Whitecaps FC Residency players called up to U-17 men's national team

Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s esteemed Residency program continues to score goals after six players were called up to represent the Canadian U-17 men’s national team. Featured on the roster are Residency goalkeeper Marco Carducci, defender Alex Comsia, midfield pair Kianz Froese and Marco Bustos, and strikers Matthew Chow and Jordan Haynes.

Froese plays in Whitecaps FC’s U-18 team while the remaining players are key figures on the U-16 side. Chow and Comsia, hail from Vancouver and North Vancouver respectively.

Canada will travel to Spain to participate in the eight-team 2012 AGS Cup and will spend 17 days together from September 27 to October 13. The Red and White will open with group matches against Morocco, Mexico and Russia. Other teams participating in the 2012 tournament are Azerbaijan, Georgia, United Arab Emirates and USA..

Speaking on behalf of Whitecaps FC’s Residency program, head of player development Craig Dalrymple said he was pleased for the youngsters, adding the call-ups reinforced the importance of the club’s youth academy to the development of soccer in British Columbia.

“It’s an honour for those players,” he said. “It’s a reward for them to be acknowledged with what they’re doing with us and our academy. It will be exciting for them to travel away with our national team as they go to Europe to play other international sides.

“That’s going to bode well for their overall development.”

Dalrymple said the trip would provide a valuable learning opportunity for the six players.

“I would expect all of them to learn and grow from that experience, and that’s quite a testament to our program that we can get six players from one age group selected to a national team,” he said.

“That’s telling us and everyone else that we are doing the right things.”
