SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR – After a 1-0 home victory over Honduras, Canada continued their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign with a scoreless draw with El Salvador on Tuesday in San Salvador.

Both teams had their chances but couldn’t convert. For Canada, Cyle Larin came close in the first half with a header off the crossbar and hit the side-netting on another late opportunity, while Will Johnson fired a dipping blast just over the bar late in the first half.

At the other end of the pitch, Dustin Corea had El Salvador's two best chances, including a clear-cut attempt saved by Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan in the 34th minute.

In the end, Canada outshot El Salvador 12-10 but a goal simply wasn’t in the cards.

As a result, Canada remain second in Group A with four points after two matches. Mexico leads the group with six points while El Salvador (one point) and Honduras (no points) are in third and fourth place, respectively.

Each team still has four matches remaining. Canada’s next two matches are on March 26 and 29 against Mexico, with the first date in Canada (location TBD) and the second match away at Estadio Azteca.

The top two finishers from each of the three groups will move on to the fifth and final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is nicknamed “The Hexagonal” (usually abbreviated to “The Hex”). The top three finishers in “The Hex” will automatically qualify for the World Cup while the fourth-place finisher will participate in a playoff with the fifth-place finisher from Asia for the final spot.

'CAPS CONTINGENT

Whitecaps FC midfielder Russell Teibert did not make the trip to El Salvador due to injury. His Canadian and 'Caps teammates Sam Adekugbe and Kianz Froese were both on the bench.
