Whitecaps FC acquire draft pick from Toronto FC for right back Steven Beitashour

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Friday that the club has acquired Toronto FC's second highest second-round draft pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for right back Steven Beitashour.

“We explored a number of options, as we really wanted to keep Steven at our club, but at the end of the day we were unable to come to an agreement,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. “We felt it was important to receive an asset rather than lose him for nothing in the Re-Entry Draft. This move will also open up significant cap space and in turn provide additional flexibility.”

Earlier this month, Whitecaps FC declined Beitashour’s contract option, which would have made him eligible for the Re-Entry Process.

“We are thankful for Steven’s contributions during his two years of service,” added Robinson. “He was a great ambassador and pleasure to be around. We wish Steven all the best.”

Beitashour, 28, joined Vancouver at the start of the 2014 season following four seasons with San Jose Earthquakes. The native of San Jose, California, made 58 appearances in all competitions with Whitecaps FC.
