Training report: 'Caps 'still working towards' deal with new right back as camp continues

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC were back on the pitch on Tuesday at UBC’s Ken Woods Field. Here’s the latest news from camp:

GETTING UP TO SPEED

That’s what this week is really all about: getting up to speed.

Monday may have been fitness testing day, but Tuesday was equally as grueling. The rain and cold probably didn’t help, either.

“It’s a lot of the tough runs in the rain, but that’s how it should be,” said Whitecaps FC goalkeeper David Ousted. “That’s how you build fitness but also build character.”

“The way Robbo wants to do it is get the ball incorporated with the fitness,” added Whitecaps FC fullback Jordan Harvey. “So it’s kind of disguised fitness, if you will, but it’s definitely getting us going.”

Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson said the focus will shift to more “football work” and “patterns of play” next week in Tucson.

NEW RIGHT BACK?

It’s no secret the ‘Caps are close to signing a new right back – Robinson has said as much.

But how close, exactly?

“We’re still working towards it,” he told reporters. “We’re still in contact with the other club to try and get it over the line. Hopefully we will in the next day or so. If not, we’re going to have to move on.”

SCOUTING REPORT

New Whitecaps FC midfielder Christian Bolaños hasn’t joined the ‘Caps just yet – he’s expected to meet the team in Tucson next week. So he’s still a little bit of an unknown commodity to some.

Not to Ousted.

The ‘Caps keeper recalls playing against Bolaños in the Danish Superliga. He liked what he saw.

“He’s a quality player,” Ousted said. “Assist wise, he can set up other players but he can also score goals himself. He’s going to be a great addition to this squad.”
