Whitecaps FC 2 visit Cascadia rival Timbers 2 on Saturday

Match Preview - T2 vs WFC2

Whitecaps FC 2 (1W-0L-0D) continue their road trip with the second match of the season against Cascadia rivals Timbers 2 (0W-1L-0D). The match kicks off at Merlo Field on Saturday at 7 p.m. Watch live or on replay at whitecapsfc2.com.

Last Saturday’s match proved to be quite the season opener. The young ‘Caps put on a strong performance despite missing a number of key players who were away with Canada U-20 national team in an international friendly against England U-20. The shorthanded roster was able to secure three points off last year's Western Conference regular season champions, setting the team off to a good start behind a goal from captain Kyle Greig and a stellar performance from goalkeeper Sean Melvin, who recorded a clean sheet in his professional debut.

Back with the team this week is 15-year old Alphonso Davies who is awaiting his professional debut. Whitecaps FC Residency products Kadin Chung, 17, and Marco Bustos, 19, return after each registering a goal for Canada in their 2-1 victory. First-team goalkeeper Marco Carducci may also be available after training with Canada alongside his fellow ‘Caps players.

Timbers 2
The first match of the season for Timbers 2 last Saturday featured six players making their professional debuts and resulted in a 2-1 loss against Swope Park Rangers. Like WFC2, T2 are in the second year of play within the USL after their inaugural season in 2015.

The two rivals split last season’s regular season series, with each team winning twice on their home field.

This week’s game takes place in Portland and considering the level of performance that WFC2 gave last week at Orange County, fans are in for another show. Both clubs have made changes to their rosters and Saturday’s match will showcase two new teams battling for three points.

What we do know for sure is that Cascadia rivalries are always exciting and we can expect to see some solid performances out of our young ‘Caps.
