Quest for Canada's best: 2016 Amway Canadian Championship begins Wednesday

Teibert with Voyageurs Cup

Will it be FC Edmonton or Ottawa Fury FC?

Vancouver Whitecaps FC could get a better idea of their semifinal opponent in this year’s Amway Canadian Championship when the tournament kicks off Wednesday at Edmonton’s Clarke Field.

FC Edmonton will host fellow NASL side Ottawa Fury FC at 6 p.m. PT in the first leg the preliminary round, before heading to Ottawa for the return leg on May 18 at TD Place. Both matches will be broadcast on canadasoccer.com.

The defending champion ‘Caps will face the winner of this two-round series in the semifinal round – on the road on June 1 and at home on June 8 (7 p.m. PT at BC Place – tickets on sale now). Toronto FC and Montreal Impact will meet in the other semifinal.

TSN will broadcast the two semifinal legs, as well as the championship final on June 22 and June 28 or June 29. It’s the first time that TSN will carry the tournament.

The Amway Canadian Championship is a five-team tournament that crowns the top team in Canada. In addition to qualifying for the CONCACAF Champions League, the winner also takes home the supporters-created Voyageurs Cup (which was first awarded in 2002).

Last year, the ‘Caps won their first-ever Voyageurs Cup after 13 years of heartbreak, defeating Montreal Impact 4-2 on aggregate in the tournament final after knocking off FC Edmonton in the semifinal.
