Training report presented by Muscle MLK: New face in training as 'Caps shift focus to Philadelphia

Training in Toronto - stretch

TORONTO, ONT – After a 1-0 loss to Toronto FC in the first leg of the Amway Canadian Championship Final, Vancouver Whitecaps FC are shifting their focus back to MLS – for this weekend, at least.

The ‘Caps visit Philadelphia Union on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT (TSN2 and TSN 1410), before returning to BC Place for the decisive second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship Final on Wednesday, June 29 (7 p.m. PT on TSN and TSN 1040 – tickets on sale NOW).

The starters from Tuesday’s match in Toronto had a pool session earlier today, while the rest of the team trained at Toronto FC’s Kia Training Ground.

Among those on the field was Canadian international David Edgar, who has joined the ‘Caps on a short-term training stint. The 29-year-old defender/midfielder has 37 appearances with the Canadian senior men’s national team. His most recent club was English Championship side Birmingham City, though he spent 2015 on loan with Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United.

Edgar, a native of Kitchener, Ontario, began his professional career with Newcastle United.

“It’s always been in my plans to eventually make the move back,” Edgar told TSN Radio’s Peter Schaad. “So when this opportunity presented itself, [Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson] told me he liked me as a player and just to come and have a look for a couple of days so I thought I’d take him up on the opportunity.”

Robinson told reporters last week that he plans to have a look at “a number of trialists” with Major League Soccer's summer transfer window set to open on July 4.

The ‘Caps will train in Toronto again on Thursday before departing for Philadelphia on Friday.
