CONCACAF Champions League: 'Caps remain in pole position as group play continues

Advantage Whitecaps FC.

The ‘Caps remain atop their group in CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) play after Sporting Kansas City and Central FC played to a 2-2 draw last week in Trinidad & Tobago.

After a scoreless first half, the two teams combined for three goals in five minutes early in the second frame. Seth Sinovic opened the scoring for SKC before Central FC responded with a pair of tallies from Marcus Joseph and Kenwyne Jones, who will join MLS expansion side Atlanta United in 2017. Then, in the 70th minute, Kevin Ellis potted the equalizer to salvage a point for Kansas City.

The ‘Caps, who opened their 2016-17 CCL campaign with a 1-0 win at Central FC, will look to increase their lead atop the Group C standings when they host Sporting KC on Tuesday night at BC Place (7 p.m. PT – tickets still available).

The top team in the group will advance to the knockout stages starting early in 2017.
