Make it back-to-back bronze medals for the Canadian women’s national team.

Canada reached the podium for a second straight Olympic games after defeating hosts Brazil 2-1 on Friday in the third-place match at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Deanne Rose, 17, and captain Christine Sinclair provided the scoring for Canada with a pair of well-orchestrated goals.

Brazil came on strong on the dying stages of the match and eventually cut into Canada's lead in the 79th minute, but the Canadians held firm.

This is just the second time that Canada has won back-to-back medals in a team summer sport, following lacrosse at St. Louis 1904 and London 1908. John Herdman’s side finished the tournament with a 5W-1L-0D record, defeating four of the world’s top 10 teams to claim bronze.

It was a historic night for Canada – and for Sinclair, too.

Friday’s match marked Sinclair’s 250th cap with the Canadian senior women’s national team. Fittingly, she celebrated the occasion with her 165th international goal, which was the eventual game-winner, as the Burnaby, B.C. native inches closer towards Aby Wambach (184) atop the international scoring charts.
