VANCOUVER, BC - Canada’s World Cup dreams came to an end on Tuesday night at BC Place.
The Red and White defeated El Salvador 3-1 in front of a crowd of 20,726 but didn’t get the help they needed from Mexico, who played to a scoreless draw with Honduras at Azteca.
As a result, Canada finish third in Group A with seven points from six matches, behind Honduras (eight points) and Mexico (16 points).
Vancouver Whitecaps FC defenders Marcel de Jong and David Edgar both appeared in Tuesday’s contest in front of their home crowd. De Jong played the full 90 minutes and drew praise for his attacking play from the left back position.
The 29-year-old created four chances on the night, second to just Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield.
Edgar, meanwhile, was subbed on in the 84th minute as a striker before finding the back of the net in stoppage time with a cool finish off a Tosaint Ricketts cross.
It was Edgar’s fourth career goal with the Canadian senior national team.
Orlando City SC striker Cyle Larin and Nick Ledgerwood also found the back of the net for Canada against an El Salvador side that was reduced to 10 men in the 56th minute.
It just wasn’t enough in the end.
Tuesday marked Canada's third straight home match at BC Place as part of their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, drawing a total attendance of 95,632 over the three matches.
