Week of Whitecaps: 'Caps to celebrate start of season with community appearances

To kick off the new season, the 'Caps will host a Week of Whitecaps featuring several community events to celebrate the start of the 2017 season. The Week of Whitecaps will begin on Tuesday, February 28 with Whitecaps FC players visiting BC Children’s Hospital and will conclude with the team’s MLS home opener against Philadelphia Union on Sunday, March 5.

Tuesday, February 28 – BC Children’s Hospital Visit

Whitecaps FC players Fredy Montero, Tim Parker, Christian Dean, Russell Teibert, Sheanon Williams, Kekuta Manneh, and Jake Nerwinski, along with mascot Spike, will make a special visit to BC Children’s Hospital on Tuesday.


BC Children’s Hospital is a key community partner of the club. All funds raised through the match day 50/50 program as well as other fundraisers throughout the year directly support BC Children’s Hospital.


Wednesday, March 1 – Spot Spike on transit, 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. PT

Look out for Whitecaps FC mascot Spike on your daily commute as he will be riding the SeaBus and the Canada Line skytrain from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. PT giving out high-fives, magnets, and mini soccer balls to fellow commuters. Start off your day by snapping a selfie with Spike and post your photo on social using the hashtag #RiseUpRainCity.


Thursday, March 2 – CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal vs. New York Red Bulls at BC Place, 7 p.m. PT

Join us as Whitecaps FC open the 2017 season at BC Place with the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals against New York Red Bulls at 7 p.m. PT. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Whitecaps FC will be looking to make history and advance to the semifinals.

Saturday, March 4 – Community Soccer Field Blitz, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. PT

Keep your eyes peeled on Saturday morning for Whitecaps FC staff who will be handing out hot chocolate, goodies, and 'Caps swag at soccer fields throughout the Lower Mainland!


Whitecaps FC staff will be at the following soccer fields from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. PT:


  • Trillium Park, Vancouver
  • Douglas Park, Vancouver
  • Ambleside Park, North Vancouver
  • Burnaby Lake Park, Burnaby


Sunday, March 5 – MLS Home Opener vs. Philadelphia Union at BC Place, 6:30 p.m. PT

Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 5 when Whitecaps FC take on Philadelphia Union in our MLS season opener at 6:30 p.m. PT. The ‘Caps last faced Philadelphia Union on June 25, 2016 and defeated the Union 3-2.
