Second leg scenarios: How the 'Caps can advance to the Canadian Championship Final

second leg scenarios - May 30

MONTREAL, QC – Win and we’re in.

After an exciting 2-1 victory in last week’s semifinal first leg, Vancouver Whitecaps FC will advance to the Canadian Championship Final for the third straight year with a win, draw, or one-goal loss with at least two away goals vs. Montreal Impact tonight at Stade Saputo (4:30 p.m. PT on TSN).

Here are all the different scenarios, keeping in mind it's a two-leg aggregate series with away goals as the tiebreaker:

Whitecaps FC advance with:

  • Any win
  • Any draw
  • A one-goal loss with at least two away goals (3-2, 4-3, etc…)

The match will go to extra time with:

  • A 2-1 Montreal win

In the event of a 2-1 win for the Impact, there will be 30 minutes of extra time (two 15-minute halves). The full 30 minutes must be played regardless of any goals scored and the away goals rule remains in effect. If no goals are scored in extra time, the match will be decided by a penalty shootout.

Montreal advance with:

  • A 1-0 win
  • Any win by at least two goals
