VANCOUVER, BC – A “naughty tackle” will have Nicolas Mezquida sidelined for six to eight weeks, Vancouver Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson told reporters on Friday.

Mezquida suffered the injury in Tuesday’s Canadian Championship defeat in Montreal.

In the 10th minute, the Uruguayan was taken down by a two-footed sliding tackle from Impact midfielder Marco Donadel before leaving the match at halftime with a high ankle sprain.

Mezquida has one goal and one assist in 10 MLS appearances this season. He also had a goal and an assist in last week’s Canadian Championship victory over the Impact at BC Place.

Whitecaps FC return to league play on Saturday afternoon against MLS newcomers Atlanta United FC (2:30 p.m. PT kickoff at BC Place – tickets still available). They will then get a week off for the FIFA break before hosting FC Dallas on Saturday, June 17 at BC Place.
