Vancouver Whitecaps FC trio Alphonso Davies, Marcel de Jong, and Russell Teibert have all been named to Canada’s 23-man roster for their June 13 friendly vs. Curaçao.
Canada head coach Octavio Zambrano picked his squad from an extended 28-man roster that trained this week in Laval. Tuesday’s match is set for 4:30 p.m. PT at Stade Saputo (watch live on TSN and RDS – tickets available via canadasoccer.com).
“The new guys have adapted well while the veterans can see a path that, if we stay on it, we can get some results,” said Zambrano. “You can start to see what the young guys can bring to the national team, but you can also see why the experienced players are still part of the team. It is a good combination and a well-balanced team.”
Davies, who just received his Canadian citizenship and first call-up earlier this week, is the youngest player in the squad at 16 years old. He is one of six players on the roster who could earn their first cap on Tuesday, including Juan Córdova, Raheem Edwards, Andrés Fresenga, Mark-Anthony Kaye, and Tyler Pasher. Whitecaps FC midfielder Russell Teibert, meanwhile, could make his first national team appearance since September 2015, while de Jong is one of the most experienced players on the roster with 50 caps to his name.
