VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Wednesday that the club has acquired centre back Aaron Maund from Real Salt Lake in exchange for Vancouver’s natural third-round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.

Maund will be added to Vancouver’s MLS roster pending receipt of his international transfer certificate and Canadian work permit. He is expected to arrive in Vancouver following the team's road match at New England Revolution this Saturday, August 12 (TV: TSN2, Radio: TSN 1410).

Aaron Maund – Whitecaps FC centre back

  • Started 85 of 98 appearances across all first-team competitions
  • RSL team leader in clearances, aerials won, and blocks in 2017 prior to trade
  • RSL Defensive Player of the Year in 2015

“Aaron is a good character, he is strong, quick, athletic, and is an important addition for us,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. “He adds experience and depth in the centre back position and will push the players we already have for minutes.”

Maund, 26, arrives in Vancouver after spending over four years with Real Salt Lake, making 77 appearances and adding three goals across all competitions. After seeing his 2016 season cut short due to a fractured foot, the 6-foot-2 defender has bounced back this year to lead all RSL centre backs with 13 MLS appearances, in addition to one goal and team-leading 54 clearances, 34 aerials won, and nine blocks. He was named the club’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2015.

Prior to his time with RSL, Maund began his MLS career with Toronto FC as their 12th overall selection out of the University of Notre Dame in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. He made 11 starts in 21 appearances as a rookie for TFC, including CONCACAF Champions League play.

A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Maund played with youth soccer with FC Greater Boston, where he teamed with Whitecaps FC defender Sheanon Williams to win the U-15 national championship in 2005.

Born to a Trinidadian father, Maund featured for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Two years later, Maund represented the United States in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, alongside Williams and WFC winger/forward Brek Shea.
