Voting is now open for the 2017 Whitecaps FC BMO Player of the Year award and will run until October 15. Here are this year’s nominees (in alphabetical order):
Fredy Montero (F)
Montero was brought in to score goals – and create them – and that’s exactly what he’s done. The Colombian striker has a team-leading 13 goals on the season, which matches his previous career-high in MLS. He also has six assists, tied for second-best on the team. In total, Montero has played a direct part in 40 per cent of Vancouver’s goals on the season.
Tim Parker (D)
Parker has established himself as a leader for this club in 2017. The 24-year-old centre back, who has served as an alternate captain, has started all but two of Vancouver’s MLS regular season matches for a team-high 2,610 minutes played. Parker leads the team with 66 aerials won and is second in clearances, interceptions, and blocks. He has also chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Yordy Reyna (M)
Reyna has made a massive impact after recovering from a broken foot suffered in the preseason. The Peruvian attacking midfielder has scored five goals, all game-winners, and added three assists in just nine starts and 16 appearances. The 'Caps have lost just one of Reyna's nine starts (5W-1L-3D).
Cristian Techera (M)
Aside from Montero, no player has contributed towards more goals than Techera, who has six goals and six assists on the season in addition to having hit the woodwork five times. The 5-foot-2 Uruguayan has also created a team-leading 41 chances.
Kendall Waston (D)
Waston took on the role of captain in 2017 – and he has not disappointed. The Costa Rican centre back has been rock solid at the back, leading the team in clearances, interceptions, and blocks, and has chipped in offensively with three goals and one assist.
