Over the course of the history of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, a number of players who have played for the club at one point or another have also represented their country at the FIFA World Cup. As we approach the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, we will feature players of years’ past who made it to soccer’s pinnacle event.
PAUL DOLAN
A Canadian goalkeeper who was born in Ottawa, Ontario and raised in Port Moody, BC, Paul Dolan played professionally in his home country for 12 years. After starting in the CSL with Edmonton Brickmen, Dolan also played with Hamilton Steelers in between his time with Vancouver 86ers.
In his 10 seasons with Vancouver 86ers, Dolan recorded the most saves (672), wins (126), and shutouts (51) in club history, while amounting the 10th most appearances (222). His time included CSL championships in 1990 and 1991.
For country
In total, Dolan made 53 appearances for Canada from 1984 to 1997, including 15 World Cup qualifying matches. At 20-years-old, he was the second youngest player on Canada’s roster at the 1986 FIFA World Cup, and started the opening match against France.
FUN FACT: While making his World Cup debut, Dolan had a chicken thrown at him from the crowd as he went to take a goal kick.
