Alphonso Davies named MLS Player of the Week following record performance at BC Place

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC winger Alphonso Davies was named the MLS Player of the Week after tallying a goal and a club MLS record three assists in Saturday’s 5-2 victory over Orlando City SC, the league announced on Tuesday.

The Canadian international’s three assists were just one shy of the MLS single-match record. He now has a total of seven assists on the season, tied for third on the MLS leaderboard, in addition to his two goals.

Davies is the ninth player to record a goal and three assists in an MLS league match since 2010, and the youngest to do so at 17 years, seven months and seven days.

Enjoying a breakout year in his third MLS season, the Edmonton product also leads the league with 71 dribbles completed, is second with 143 duels won, and fifth with 32 tackles won.

Saturday’s record performance came in another blistering offensive outing for the ‘Caps, who have now scored 16 goals in their last six matches, the highest in MLS in that span.

Davies is the second Whitecaps FC player in three weeks to receive the league honour, following Cristian Techera in Week 13.

Following the FIFA World Cup break, the ‘Caps return to action riding a six-match undefeated streak when they visit Philadelphia Union at Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday, June 23. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. PT live on TSN 1/5 and TSN 1040 Radio. They are back home on Sunday, July 1 when they host Colorado Rapids on Canada Day at BC Place.
