Huitema vs. Netherlands

Huitema makes World Cup debut, Canada to face Sweden in Round of 16

Canada will face Sweden in the Round of 16 at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup after finishing second in Group E, following a 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands on Thursday.

18-year-old Jordyn Huitema, a product of the Whitecaps FC BMO Academy System and REX program in partnership with BC Soccer, earned the start to make her World Cup debut.

After a scoreless first half that saw Canada generate several promising attacks, the Dutch struck first with a goal on 54 minutes.

However Canada responded, tying the match at 1-1 on 60 minutes. Huitema started the play, finding PSG teammate Ashley Lawrence, who then crossed to Christine Sinclair to tap in at the back post.

The goal was the 182nd of Sinclair's career, leaving her just three away from passing Abby Wambach and setting the all-time international record.

The Dutch would find a winner in the 75th minute.

Canada's Round of 16 match versus Sweden will take place on Monday, June 24 at 12 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast live on TSN.
