Bikel, Cavallini look to give 'Caps a boost in rematch vs. RSL

Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Real Salt Lake
MLS Regular Season - VWFC Match #17
Saturday, October 10, 2020 - 7:08 p.m. PT
Providence Park, Portland, OR
TV: TSN1/4 - RADIO: TSN Radio 1040

REMATCH: Saturday's fixture comes just three weeks after the 'Caps defeated Real Salt Lake 2-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium in a match that featured seven yellow cards plus one sendoff. With both sides sensing urgency following tough losses midweek, the rematch could be another testy and physical showdown. Another win over RSL would draw the two clubs in the standings. RSL is one of three clubs currently standing in between VWFC and the final playoff spot.

JAKE AT 100: Right back Jake Nerwinski looks to make his 100th appearance for VWFC across all competitions. Since the beginning of 2017 when Nerwinski joined Whitecaps FC as an MLS SuperDraft selection, Nerwinski has led the club with 4,549 touches, 2,626 passes, 391 duels won, 119 interceptions, and 89 tackles won in league play. The second-longest tenured player on the 'Caps first-team roster next only to Russell Teibert, Nerwinski  has eight assists and three goals, including two in 2020, across all competitions. He turns 26 next Saturday, October 17.

BACK IN THE FOLD: Janio Bikel and Lucas Cavallini hope to provide the 'Caps a boost as both are available after serving their respective suspensions. Leonard Owusu and Russell Teibert look to situate themselves back into the midfield following their return from injury on Wednesday.

CENTRE BACK SITUATION: With Andy Rose picking up a red card on Wednesday evening, and Jasser Khmiri away on international duty, the 'Caps may look to 22-year old Derek Cornelius and 21-year old Ranko Veselinovic to man the middle of their backline - the same centre back partnership that featured in their road win against RSL in September. Cornelius leads VWFC with 45 clearances, while Veselinovic tops the club with 14 blocks. Érik Godoy is also an option after the Independent Review Panel supported his red card appeal, and his fine and suspension were rescinded. RSL did not register a shot on goal in their midweek loss to Seattle, but expect things to be different if Damir Kreilach is back on the lineup after sitting out their last outing to rest. DP midfielder Albert Rusnak is away on international duty for RSL.
