Canada set for historic first ever knockout match at FIFA World Cup

Ali BC Place

It's already been a historic run for Canada.

With six former Whitecaps FC first team players on the squad, the Red & White secured their first point, first win, and now will play their first knockout match at the FIFA World Cup.

That first win came at a raucous BC Place, home of Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Fans in Vancouver watched a number of familiar faces play on their former home turf, including 2025 MLS Cup goalscorer Ali Ahmed, goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, centre back Derek Cornelius, fullback Richie Laryea, as well as Niko Sigur, who spent time in the Whitecaps FC BMO MLS Academy, coming off the bench.

During this World Cup run, Canada has trained at the Whitecaps FC National Soccer Development Centre over the past week, with a final Friday session at the facility before heading to Los Angeles.

It is there where they will face South Africa in the Round of 32 this coming Sunday, June 28 at 12 p.m. PT, live on CTV, TSN, and Crave.
