match report vs. SJ

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC kicked off their third straight home game at BC Place with a 3-3 draw against Western Conference foes San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon.

As the first half progressed with both sides hunting for the opening goal, ‘Caps goalkeeper Cody Cropper saved a Cristian Espinoza shot just outside the box inside the 21st minute of the match.

San Jose continued to press, as Espinoza crossed a ball inside the box to forward Jeremy Ebobisse, his header was then denied by Cropper in the 34th minute.

The ‘Caps then looked for the momentum to swing their way, as Brian White’s one touch pass led to Ryan Raposo curling a shot right outside the top corner of the net in the 40th minute of the game.

The second half turned out to be a wild. It started as Lucas Cavallini’s footwork outside the box led to a give-and-go with Raposo, which saw Cavallini finishing the opportunity to open the scoring in the 52nd minute of the match.

However, the Earthquakes answered to the Blue & White’s push in the 62nd minute of the match, as Espinoza’s cross found Jamiro Monteiro to head it in and level the game midway through the second half.

As San Jose’s defence fended off a ‘Caps counterattack, Cade Cowell’s pass from the left side connected to Ebobisse in the 73rd minute of the match to give the away side a 2-1 lead.

Sartini’s side would not give up, as Cavallini’s drive to the final third ended with a cross that found Déiber Caicedo inside the box, his patience then led to Raposo scoring the tying goal in the 75th minute.

The ‘Quakes pace from Cowell led to another counter attack as he fed the ball inside the box to Espinoza, his pass then gave Ebobisse a brace in the 81st minute of the match.

The scoring was not done. Following a corner from Caicedo, Érik Godoy’s low finish levelled the match at the 91st minute.

The home side looked to find the winner in added time, as Gutierrez’s cross found Cavallini just before the final whistle, but his header trickled just wide off the far post.

The ‘Caps conclude their May home stand at BC Place with an upcoming match against FC Dallas this coming Wednesday, May 18. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. PT. For tickets, visit whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
