More than the crest: 'Caps make statement with personal messages on jersey patch

Teibert - MMIW

When the 'Caps finally take to the pitch again on Wednesday evening, they will be playing for more than the crest on their chest.

  • LIVE: 'Caps vs. Earthquakes on TSN1/4 & TSN Radio 1040 at 6 p.m. PT on Wednesday

The players will make a statement with a personal touch on a special “MLS Unites” jersey patch. In addition to the MLS, MLS WORKS and MLS Players’ Association logos, it contains a blank space for players to write the name of someone they want to honour with an inspirational message.

The messages and names will be scribbled in various languages, like Inbeom Hwang and Ali Adnan electing to write their statements in South Korean and Arabic, respectively.

A number of statements touch on social justice - Jake Nerwinski's says "EVERYONE vs. racism".

Others are donning personal inspirations - Maxime Crepeau is honouring his wife's grandfather, who recently passed away, while his fellow keeper Thomas Hasal will be playing with his mother's name on his back as she fights in the frontline as a doctor in Saskatoon.

Russell Teibert's jersey patch says "xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw səl̓ilwətaɁɬ təməxʷ #solidarity" for the first half. The City of Vancouver is on the traditional territories of three local tribes and nations that comprise the Coast Salish peoples, indigenous to the Pacific Northwest Coast: Musqueam, Squamish Nation, and Tsleil-Waututh.

In the second half, Teibert's patch will say MMIW, which stands for "Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women."
