By the numbers: Why 2014 was a record-breaking campaign for Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Celebration, waving - season finale

VANCOUVER, BC – What a season.

It ended on a tough note, but it’s hard not to be encouraged by what Vancouver Whitecaps FC accomplished in 2014. As evidenced by the numbers below, it was a record-breaking campaign for the team on many levels.

Numbers don’t tell the whole story – the fruits of what Carl Robinson and his coaching staff established this year will come to fruition more and more next season and beyond – but they do provide some context to show the progress that’s been made.

50

Whitecaps FC hit the 50-point mark this season, which was their highest-ever point since joining MLS in 2011, and the most ever by a Canadian MLS club. In fact, the Blue and White have improved their point total every season since that inaugural year.

Eighteen of Vancouver’s 50 points this season came on the road, which is also a new MLS club record.

Check out their trajectory below (playoff years are bolded).

As you can see, the ‘Caps lost just eight matches in 2014 – their fewest amount of losses in a single MLS season. Only LA Galaxy, who finished second to Seattle Sounders FC in the MLS Supporters’ Shield race, lost fewer games (seven).

393

The ‘Caps went on a 393-minute shutout streak to close out the regular season, the longest shutout streak by any team in MLS this season. If you count the playoffs, that streak was actually 433 minutes, which sets a new club record in MLS. Vancouver actually had two of the three longest shutout streaks in MLS this season.

13

Speaking of clean sheets, Whitecaps FC had 13 of them this year. Not only was that the highest total in the league this season, it also surpassed the club’s previous MLS record (12).

2

Vancouver won their second straight Cascadia Cup this year after upsetting first-place Seattle Sounders FC last month at CenturyLink Field. The ‘Caps went undefeated against Seattle in 2014, posting a 2W-0L-1D record. The Blue and White now have five Cascadia Cup titles to their name, two more than both Portland and Seattle.

They also made the MLS Cup Playoffs for the second time in four years.

1

For the first time in club history, Whitecaps FC have secured a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League – a 24-team competition between the top clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. They did so by finishing as the top-ranked Canadian MLS team this season.

11

The 'Caps sold out 11 home matches at BC Place this season, a new MLS club record. The average attendance for Whitecaps FC home matches was 20,408, which was fourth best in the league, and their best since joining MLS.

13,570

That’s how many combined minutes players aged 23 or under (at the beginning of the season) played in 2014 – not including Amway Canadian Championship fixtures.

See how that compares to previous years.

When he took the job a year ago, Robinson said he’d give young players opportunities.

He wasn’t kidding.

328.18

Another thing Robinson said from the outset is that his team would play a possession, passing based style. And they did just that. The ‘Caps completed 328.18 passes per game, which is significantly more than they did in previous years.

YEAR

Along those lines, Vancouver’s passing accuracy (79.7 per cent) was also the best its ever been.
