Wednesday's match will mark the 17th MLS meeting between the 'Caps and the Loons. It is the second and final meeting of the regular season between the two teams after Vancouver claimed a thrilling 3-1 victory on the road last month.

WEEKLY STORYLINES

'CAPS ON TOP: Following the results of MLS Matchday 15, including a come-from-behind 3-2 victory away to Real Salt Lake, Vancouver Whitecaps FC are back at the top of the Supporters' Shield standings thanks to their 9W-1L-4D record (31 points). The 'Caps, who are now unbeaten in 14 games across all competitions, hold a four-point advantage on second-placed San Diego FC in the Western Conference. Vancouver leads the league in goal differential with plus 15, the least goals conceded with 12, the least shots on target against with 45, most corner kicks with 93, sit second in expected goals with 32.98, are tied for second most key passes with 11, and hold the third best passing per cent at 87.4%.

THE LOONS ARE THE PREY: Playing their fourth and fifth matches across 16 days, the 'Caps are set to begin the week with a crucial six-pointer in the West as they face Minnesota United FC at BC Place on Wednesday. The Blue and White have won three of their last four meetings against the Loons, including a 3-1 road win back in April that saw Pedro Vite grab a brace and Sebastian Berhalter score a stunner from distance. A win on Wednesday would see the 'Caps create an eight-point gap between themselves and the third place Loons, while maintaining their lead in both the Supporters' Shield standings, as well as equalling their longest unbeaten run in MLS play (10 matches).

BATTLE FOR CONTINENTAL GLORY: It all comes down to this. On Sunday, the 'Caps will play the biggest game in their MLS era as they face LIGA MX side Cruz Azul in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup Final at Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City, Mexico. Vancouver eliminated three-time champions Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica in round one, five-time champions CF Monterrey in the round of 16, three-time champions Pumas UNAM in the quarterfinals, and defending MLS Supporters' Shield champions Inter Miami CF in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Cruz Azul defeated Haitian side Real Hope FA, Seattle Sounders FC, Club América, and Tigres UANL. The winner of the final will qualify for this year's 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup, as well as the second edition of the new and expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2029.
