WEEKLY STORYLINES
STARTING ON THE RIGHT FOOT: Vancouver Whitecaps FC kicked off their 2026 MLS regular season campaign this past weekend with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Western Conference foes Real Salt Lake in front of over 23,000 fans at BC Place. The win, which marked the club's 500th MLS regular season match, saw the 'Caps secure back-to-back home opener victories for only the second time in their MLS era. New signing AZ scored the winner, becoming the fourth Vancouver player to score on their MLS debut for the club over the last 12 months, joining Jayden Nelson, Tate Johnson, and Antoine Coupland. The 'Caps will now look to build on their opening day win as they start the season with seven of the first eight MLS matches at BC Place.
WIN AND MOVE ON: The task is clear. Win and move on. That's exactly what the 'Caps will be aiming to do on Wednesday as they host Costa Rican side CS Cartaginés in the Second Leg of Concacaf Champions Cup, Round One action. The two sides played to a 0-0 draw last week in Cartago, Costa Rica, with the 'Caps having the better of the chances despite the lengthy travel and high altitude. If the two teams are tied 0-0 at the end of regulation on Wednesday, the match will go to extra time and kicks from the spot if needed. The winner will move on to the Round of 16 to face Seattle Sounders FC. Similar to the 'Caps, Cartaginés won their match at the weekend, claiming a 2-1 victory at home over AD Municipal Liberia.
MAPLE LEAF MATCHUP: Following Concacaf Champions Cup play, the 'Caps will look to make it two wins from two to begin the regular season, as they're set to host rivals Toronto FC in an all-Canadian clash at BC Place on Saturday, February 28. Dating back to September 2020, the Blue and White are unbeaten in their last seven meetings across all competitions against the Reds, shutting out TFC four times and earning a 4-0 victory in their last regular season meeting at BC Place in 2024 Another added fact, Vancouver are two MLS regular season wins away from matching Toronto’s 183 league victories. The 'Caps are also expecting a crowd of over 22,000 for Saturday's match.
