Spectator Info: What to expect at Friday’s Leagues Cup match

Leagues Cup trophy

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC will play their first ever match in the Leagues Cup on Friday as they take on the best team in the region, reigning Concacaf Champions League winners Club León, at BC Place.

Here are a few important notes for all fans heading to the match.

Churr-on the ‘Caps
A special Canadian churro featuring a maple smoked bacon glaze will be featured at the pizza stands at sections 222 and 249.

In addition to the churro, Whitecaps FC and BC Place will also be featuring a spicy pineapple Margarita at the el Jimador location at section 202.

Neutral site
While Friday’s match will be played at BC Place, it will be a neutral site for this Leagues Cup match. That means that unlike a regular season match, the ‘Caps are not the home team – they will be Team B, while León as the higher seed will be Team A.

No ties!
The group stage of the Leagues Cup consists of groups of three. The ‘Caps are in West Group 3 with Club León and Los Angeles Galaxy.

Friday’s match is under Leagues Cup rules, and that means no ties. If the score is tied after 90 minutes, the match will go to a shootout.

Three points for a win in regulation, two points for a shootout win, and one point for a shootout loss.

Who advances?
Each team in the group plays each other once, and the top two teams in each three-team group will advance.

After Friday, Club León plays LA Galaxy on Tuesday, July 25, and the ‘Caps conclude the group at LA Galaxy next Saturday, July 29.
