Whitecaps FC sign midfielder Russell Teibert to new contract through 2023

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder Russell Teibert has agreed to a new contract through 2023 with option for 2024, the club announced on Saturday.

“Russell represents what we are building at this club with our four cornerstones,” said Axel Schuster, CEO and sporting director of Whitecaps FC. “He played in our first ever MLS game and has been a model professional on the pitch and in the community. He is a presence in our locker room that his teammates look upon for leadership and someone our Academy players look up to and respect.”



“We are building a club that our supporters will be proud of, and I’m here for the long term,” added Teibert. “What the club has been doing, especially in the community over the past couple of months, convinced me this is an organization that I'd want to continue to grow with and a city I want to continue to call home.”

The announcement comes in the leadup to the ‘Caps crucial match versus rivals Seattle Sounders FC in the MLS is Back Tournament on Sunday evening. Kickoff is live at 7:30 p.m. PT on TSN1/4 and TSN Radio 1040.

  • Among club’s all-time leaders in several MLS categories: second with 17 assists, and third with 168 appearances, 125 starts, 11,307 minutes played, 125 chances created, 4,482 successful passes, and 85.93% passing accuracy (min. 1,000 successful passes)
  • 2015 George Gross Memorial Trophy winner, 2018 Jock MacDonald Unsung Hero, 2017 VWFC Humanitarian of the Year


The longest-tenured player on the roster with 200 overall appearances, Teibert ranks second in the club’s all-time MLS rankings with 17 assists, and is third in MLS starts, appearances, minutes, chances created, successful passes, and passing accuracy.

In 2017, Teibert was named the VWFC Humanitarian of the Year, and he continues to be a passionate community leader.

A product of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Teibert originally joined the club’s youth ranks in 2008. He has two goals and 27 caps for the Canadian men’s national team.
