WATCH: 16-year-old Huitema scores twice for Canada in 6-0 win over Costa Rica

Jordyn Huitema just turned 16 last month.

And on Sunday afternoon in Toronto, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite BC Soccer REX forward opened her account with the Canadian women’s national team with a pair of goals in a 6-0 win over Costa Rica. Huitema, who subbed on for her idol Christine Sinclair in the 67th minute, scored her first goal in the 73rd minute before adding a second less than a minute later.

The Chilliwack, B.C. native becomes the second youngest goalscorer in Canadian women’s national team history after former Whitecaps FC women’s player Kara Lang, who scored at the age of 15.

Huitema’s second-half brace capped off a dominating performance for the Canadians, who got things rolling with a second-minute tally from 18-year-old Deanne Rose before 22-year-old Janine Beckie bagged a natural hat-trick with goals in the sixth, 13th, and 21st minutes.

The future looks bright, indeed.

Huitema, who now has four caps with the women’s national team, joined the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite REX Program in Partnership with BC Soccer in January 2015 after previously playing with Surrey United SC in the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League.

“She’s a great kid,” Girls Elite REX head coach Emma Humphries told whitecapsfc.com last year. “She’s brilliant in the classroom and one of the hardest working in the group as well. On the field, she’s just a competitor, she wants to win everything. I’m not surprised how well she’s done, and we’ll continue to work with her to improve.”

With the victory, Canada have improved their 2017 international record to 6W-2L-1D.
