WFC2 earn shootout win, as Adekugbe and Veselinović return to game action

BURNABY, BC – Underneath a gloriously sunny sky, Whitecaps FC 2 drew 1-1 with winless Colorado Rapids 2, before the young ’Caps collected the extra point in the shootout. During the kicks from the spot, goalkeeper Isaac Boehmer leapt twice to his right to provide consecutive denials on Colorado’s James Cameron and Charlie Harper.

Head coach Rich Fagan had seven first team players slotted into his starting XI. Among that group, two defenders returned from long-term injuries to make their season debuts: captain Ranko Veselinović returned from an ACL injury that occurred back in July 2025 in his 200th Whitecaps FC cap. Meanwhile, Sam Adekugbe also finally laced up after surgery for a torn Achilles tendon in June of last year.

The young ’Caps began with a bang. In the ninth minute, midfielder Carson Rassak created a turnover in the Rapids box and looped a probing cross into the centre of the box for striker Rayan Elloumi. The 18-year-old stutter-stepped to his right to bolt into open space and belted home the opener past Rapids 2 goalkeeper Zack Campagnolo for 1-0. Set-up man Rassak continued his white-hot season with his fifth assist – which tied him for first in helpers across the entire MLS NEXT Pro league.

At the other end, onrushing Colorado midfielder Mamadou Diop won a turnover of his own, and finished with a cheeky chip into the unguarded net for the 1-1 equalizer.

Near the end of the first half, Boehmer redeemed himself in round two versus Diop. The ’keeper bent low for a savvy fingertip denial on a dribbler that came four yards from glory.

After play resumed, Boehmer was imperious. In a one-on-one duel, he emphatically denied Colorado forward Josh Copeland’s powerful 20-yard strike before regulation time concluded.

In the shootout, it was again Boehmer who came up big, securing two important points for WFC2 in the Western Conference.

Up next, the young ’Caps head south to California for two matches on the road. First, Whitecaps FC 2 will lace up against LAFC 2 on Sunday, May 3 at 7 p.m. PT. The following weekend, WFC2 take on San Jose Earthquakes II on Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m. PT.
