VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced on Monday that the club has signed defender Prince Amponsah to a Whitecaps FC 2 (WFC2) contract in MLS NEXT Pro through 2026.

Amponsah, 22, signed an MLS contract as a Homegrown player with New York City FC in January 2025. A product of the NYCFC Academy, the centre back started 20 of his 22 appearances with NYCFC II in MLS NEXT Pro in 2025, with a 90 percent pass completion.
The Bronx native returned to NYCFC following a standout collegiate career at Wake Forest. Amponsah served as team captain and earned 2024 ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player, 2024 Coaches Second-Team All-South Region honours, 2022 ACC All-Tournament Team, and 2022 All-ACC Third-Team. He finished his collegiate career ranked seventh in program history in both appearances (92) and starts (84).
Before joining Wake Forest, Amponsah spent four seasons in New York City FC’s academy, making 86 appearances, including 79 starts. He was one of 10 academy players that were invited to participate in the first team’s preseason in 2020.
In-between college seasons, Amponsah also played with Manhattan SC in USL League Two from 2021 to 2024.
Amponsah was born in Ghana and moved to the United States at the age of eight. At the international level, Amponsah previously took part in United States U-14 national team camps.
