As the saying goes, you’re only as old as you feel. That’s certainly true of the vivacious and vibrant Wendy McDonald, who celebrates being 90 years young today.
Fans of Vancouver Whitecaps FC have a lot to be thankful for from the pioneering McDonald. As one of the original founding group of investors for Whitecaps FC, the former head of The BC Bearing Group helped get the ball rolling for the club back in 1974. Known for her savvy and strength of character, Wendy has always been well ahead of her time, including having the foresight to share in a vision of what professional soccer could become here in British Columbia. That belief from the core group of owners in the future of professional soccer in the city would bear fruit five years later when the team won the NASL championship. Over 100,000 people would join Wendy and the rest of the club to celebrate the ‘Caps victory at Robson Square after the team captured the imagination and pride of the city and province with that win.
“Wendy is an extraordinary person,” exclaimed Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi. “She's always been interested in the success of Whitecaps FC and after all this time she's still supporting the club that she helped to start up. That's a true testament to her loyalty to the game and to Whitecaps FC.”
Even at 90, age has not slowed Wendy down. She continues to be involved with the club, contributing generously to the Whitecaps Foundation and serving on their Net Works Committee, as well as by helping to inspire generations through her example. Vancouver Whitecaps FC would like to extend heartfelt wishes of happy birthday to a member of our family, Wendy McDonald, in appreciation of her part in the development of Whitecaps FC’s legacy. Congratulations Wendy on reaching another significant milestone.
