Vancouver Whitecaps FC players attend Soccer Night in Newtown

On January 7, 2013 in Newtown, Connecticut, over 40 Major League Soccer (MLS) players and almost 1,500 Newtown community members came together for “Soccer Night in Newtown”. A tribute to the many victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy, this event aimed to distract the families from recent events, and help create an unforgettable experience for children and families alike.

Included in this dedicated group of MLS players were ‘Caps goalkeeper Brad Knighton and forward Omar Salgado. Fuelled by compassion, both players were eager to provide their support in anyway possible.

With over four hours filled with soccer drills, mingling, photos, autographs, and hundreds of smiling children, the event surpassed the expectations of all those involved.

"The event was a great experience, one that I will never forget," said Salgado. "I was very happy and thankful to be able to be a part of it, to meet the families that were affected by this tragedy, and to see all the kids and families smiling and happy.”

“It was an unbelievable event,” added Knighton. “Having the chance to talk and interact with the kids and their families after such a tragedy, and to be able to bring a smile to their faces, even if for a few hours, is something I will never forget”.
