Kenny Miller called up to Scotland national team

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed today that striker Kenny Miller has been called into the Scottish national team by head coach Gordon Strachan for World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Serbia later this month.

Miller will be given the opportunity to add to his 66 caps and 17 goals at international level as the Scots host Wales at Hampden Park in Glasgow on March 22 before traveling to Novi Sad, Serbia, for a March 26 match at Karadjordje Stadium on what promises to be a daunting road trip.

The second-year Whitecaps FC striker, one of just three players on the Scottish roster based outside the United Kingdom, will miss at least one Whitecaps FC game, with Vancouver visiting Houston Dynamo on March 23. He should return in time for the club's following contest against Chivas USA on March 30.

The clash with local rivals Wales marks Gordon Strachan's first competitive fixture as head coach of Scotland. The former international midfielder, who represented Scotland at the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cups, won his first game in charge, a 1-0 friendly victory against Estonia in February.

Four games into the current European qualifying stage, Scotland find themselves in last place in UEFA Group A with two points from four matches. Belgium and Croatia are the runaway leaders in the group, tied at the top on 10 points while Serbia sit in third place with four points.

The top finisher in each of the nine groups earns a berth in Brazil 2014, while the top eight second-place finishers take part in two-legged playoffs.
