Six Whitecaps FC Residency players called up to Canadian U-17 national team

The Canadian Soccer Association announced on Thursday that a team-leading six Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency players have been called up to Canada’s men’s U-17 team ahead of the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship to take place in Panama beginning on April 6. The group will convene in Sunrise, Florida from March 30 to April 4.

Included on the roster are goalkeeper Marco Carducci, defender Alex Comsia, midfielders Kianz Froese, Jordan Haynes and Marco Bustos, and striker Matthew Chow.

“This will be a chance for us to finalize our roster and keep the momentum going after a couple strong performances during our last camp in Costa Rica,” said U-17 head coach Sean Fleming. “We will have a few days in Florida to make sure that everybody is one-hundred percent focus on the task at hand.

“We have a very difficult opening match at the CONCACAF Championship against Trinidad and Tobago so we need to ensure we put forward our best possible performance to start the competition.”

The team will train for four days in Florida before departing for Panama on 4 April.

Canada have been drawn into Group B at the CONCACAF Championship alongside Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago.

The top two teams from the group will advance to the all-important quarter-final stage that will determine which four CONCACAF nations will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup UAE 2013.

Canada has assembled a roster of 23 players for pre-tournament camp in Florida. The squad will need to be trimmed to just 20 players for the CONCACAF Championship.
