VANCOUVER, BC – Whitecaps FC Reserves continue their preparations for the upcoming MLS Reserve League campaign as they take on local university side Trinity Western Spartans in a scrimmage on Tuesday.
The match will be played at Thunderbird Stadium with kickoff at 4 p.m. PT. The match is free of charge to attend and you can follow the action on Twitter through @WhitecapsMatch.
Last time out, Whitecaps FC Reserves saw off the challenge of North American Soccer League (NASL) side FC Edmonton in a convincing 4-2 victory to extend their win streak to three matches.
There were four different scorers for the reserves as Paulo Jr., Tom Heinemann, Kekuta Manneh and Corey Hertzog got their names on the score sheet against the Eddies.
Tuesday's match against Trinity Western Spartans will provide another opportunity for the likes of Johnny Leveron gain match fitness and and other reserve players to press their claims for more first team MLS action.
TRINITY WESTERN UNIVERSITY
Trinity Western Spartans enjoyed a successful 2012 campaign in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Canada West Pacific Division as they finished second with a 9W-1L-4D record. The Spartans came close to claiming a medal as they lost 2-1 in the Canada West Bronze match against University of Saskatchewan.
There are several Whitecaps FC Prospects graduates in the current Spartans roster with Carlos del Aquila, Jerome Lou, Evan Lowther, Cameron Parkes, Denny Serifovic, Jordan Whitehead and brothers Rhys and Brayden Volkenant all having spent time with Vancouver.
Spartans coach Pat Rohla had a successful stint coaching Vancouver Whitecaps FC women’s team from 2001 to 2007, as he won the United Soccer Leagues (USL) W-League championship as an assistant coach in 2004 and as head coach in 2006. Rohla was also named the 2012 Canada West Coach of the Year after his success with the Spartans.
The next scheduled match for Whitecaps FC Reserves will be their first of the 2013 MLS Reserve League season when they host Real Salt Lake Reserves on Sunday, April 14 at Thunderbird Stadium. Kickoff for that match will be 11 a.m. PT.
