Whitecaps FC Reserves defeat Trinity Western University Spartans

Kekuta Manneh

VANCOUVER, BC – An overcast, chilly afternoon at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium set the stage for a 6-1 Whitecaps FC Reserves win over a young Trinity Western University side.

Just eight minutes into the match, midfielder Aminu Abdallah sent youngster Kekuta Manneh in with Tom Heinemann. The two forwards were in alone against the TWU goalkeeper Andrew Hicks when Manneh passed it off to Heinemann, who made no mistake and gave the ‘Caps an early 1-0 lead with a left-footed tap into the back of the net.

In the 17th minute, Paulo Jr. played a nice ball to Manneh who, after some fancy footwork, roofed the ball over the head of the TWU keeper and into the top corner of the net. Within a minute, Corey Hertzog scored to give the ‘Caps a 3-0 lead.

Within a three minute interval, in the 31st minute, Heinemann scored his second goal of the match with a header off a pass from Russell Teibert and Teibert himself scored to give the ‘Caps a 5-0 lead off a pass from Hertzog.

The start of the second half saw two changes for the ‘Caps, as Caleb Clarke came on for Hertzog and Greg Klazura replaced Teibert. The only change for the Spartans was a switch of goalkeepers, as Evan Lowther came on for Hicks.

The final 45 minutes also proved to be more equal, as both teams had a number of chances to increase their tally.

In the 69th minute, the start of a flurry of action had TWU get their first shot on target but a great save by Simon Thomas prevented the Spartans from getting on the board. Two minutes later, Whitecaps FC Residency product Yassin Essa played a short ball to Ethan Sampson, who was alone on Lowther and slid it into the back of the net, giving the Blue and White a commanding 6-0 lead.

A few minutes later, Spartan striker Spencer Schmidt netted the only goal of the match for the Spartans, as the match finished with a final score of 6-1.

Whitecaps FC Reserves will now prepare for their first match of the MLS Reserve League season against Real Salt Lake on Sunday, April 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium.
