Whitecaps FC U-23 travel to Oregon

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 (1W-1L-0D) continue their United Soccer Leagues (USL) Premier Development League (PDL) season this Thursday, May 23 as they travel to Oregon to face Portland Timbers U-23 (2W-0L-0D). Kickoff will be at 11 a.m. at JELD-WEN Field in Portland.

In their last outing, the ‘Caps fell 3-2 in defeat to Vancouver Island rivals Victoria Highlanders on Friday, May 17, at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium.

All five goals were scored in a wild second half, with Niall Cousens netting both goals for the Blue and White.

“Portland Timbers have amassed another good squad this year,” commented Stuart Neely, Whitecaps FC head of high performance, on the match up. “They have quality players, are well coached and we’re looking to take some points away from them this weekend and bounce back from our last match. There’s no better team to do that against.”

In their last match, on Tuesday, May 21, the Timbers fell 1-0 to Charleston Battery at JELD-WEN Field in US Open Cup play. Whitecaps FC loanee, Emmanuel Adjetey, set-up the lone goal for the South Carolina side.

In PDL action, the Timbers defeated North Sound SeaWolves 2-1 on Saturday, May 18. Forward Colin Clarke scored twice for the Timbers, as they continued their strong start to the PDL season.

Over two meetings last season, the ‘Caps were unable to earn a point against the Timbers, as they lost two separate 2-1 decisions to their Northwest Division rivals. All-time, the ‘Caps hold a 1W-6L-0D record against the Oregon side.

After this rivalry clash, the 'Caps return home to host North Sound SeaWolves on Sunday, May 26, at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT and admission is free to the public.
