Miller called up to Scotland for international friendly against England on August 14

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC confirmed today that alternate captain Kenny Miller has been called up to Scotland’s 29-man squad for their international friendly against England August 14 at Wembley Stadium.

Miller, 33, has scored 17 goals in 68 career appearances for Scotland. The striker’s last appearance for the Scottish national team came in a 2-0 defeat to Serbia March 26 during their recent World Cup qualifying campaign.

Gordon Strachan’s side will use the upcoming friendly as preparation for their World Cup qualifier versus Belgium in September. They will not advance to next year’s World Cup, but remain in contention for Euro 2016.

The Scotland-England fixture has been dubbed as international football’s oldest rivalry. England currently holds the edge with a 45-41-24 record in 110 meetings. Next month’s contest is being hosted as part of The Football Association’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

“I’m delighted,” Miller told whitecapsfc.com. “It’s the first opportunity I’ve had in my career to play in one of these Scotland-England games so I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a game I’ve watched a lot when I was younger. They used to do it on a yearly basis. Unfortunately, I’ve never had the opportunity to play in it. There’s no better place to play than New Wembley and hopefully a full house. I’m really, really looking forward to it.”

The native of Edinburgh, Scotland has scored six goals in 12 MLS matches this season. The ‘Caps host San Jose Earthquakes Aug. 10 at BC Place and visit Colorado Rapids Aug. 17, but Miller is not expected to miss either match.
