Preparations for Cascadia clash underway

Brad Knighton and Jordan Harvey win soccer tennis tourney

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC were back to work Monday morning at UBC’s Dhillon Field after suffering a 1-0 defeat to the Philadelphia Union Saturday at BC Place.

It was an up-tempo two-hour training session for the Reserves, while Saturday's starters enjoyed a lighter recovery day after displaying a valiant effort against the Union despite playing with 10 men for most of the match.

The session started with a light-hearted soccer tennis tournament, which saw goalkeeper Brad Knighton and defender Jordan Harvey emerge as victors. The second hour saw the Reserves put through their paces.

Neither Kenny Miller (right adductor tightness) nor Brad Rusin (right hip contusion) took part in training. They both picked up knocks over the weekend and their status for the August 3 Cascadia tilt at Portland is unknown.

“I don’t think it’s too major but we’ll have to wait and see in the next couple days,” head coach Martin Rennie told whitecapsfc.com.

The ‘Caps were also without Camilo on Monday, as the Brazilian striker is currently in Kansas City for Wednesday’s MLS All-Star Game. Camilo, who is currently tied for the lead atop the MLS Golden Boot race with 13 goals, will be available for selection on Saturday.

Defender Andy O’Brien, meanwhile, did some light running and continued to receive treatment from head of sports science and medicine Rick Celebrini. The former Irish international remains questionable for the upcoming match.
