Defending the Cascadia Cup: 'Caps need a point on Saturday to stay alive

VANCOUVER, BC – The Cascadia Cup could be awarded on Saturday night at CenturyLink Field (7 p.m. PT on TSN1) – but not if Vancouver Whitecaps FC have anything to do with it.

A Seattle Sounders FC win against Whitecaps FC this weekend would give Seattle their first Cascadia Cup title since 2011 and fourth all-time. It would also end Vancouver’s hopes of becoming the first team to win three straight Cascadia Cups – the ‘Caps need at least a point to stay alive.

On the other hand, if Whitecaps FC win on Saturday it would set up a decisive showdown for the Cascadia Cup when Seattle comes to town on September 19 at BC Place

Here’s a closer look at how things stand heading into the weekend.

* The first tiebreaker is "greater number of points in matches between the teams concerned," which is why Whitecaps FC sit above the Timbers despite having the same number of total points.

Footage from last year's Cascadia Cup celebrations in Seattle

The origins of the Cascadia Cup date back to when Vancouver, Portland and Seattle were members of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division.

The combined supporters of the three clubs created the two-foot tall silver Cup, which is awarded annually to the team with the best head-to-head record over their Pacific Northwest rivals in regular season matches.

Vancouver won the first two editions of the competition in 2004 and 2005 and added a third title in 2008. Whitecaps FC have also won the last two editions of the tournament, making them the most successful club in competition history.
