International 'Caps: Bustos and Froese debut, Waston goes 90, and more

Three ‘Caps appear for Canada in 1-1 draw with Ghana

Highlights: Canada and Ghana play to 1-1 draw

Canada’s senior men’s national team put in an encouraging performance and came away with a 1-1 draw with Ghana in a friendly at Washington’s RFK Stadium. Sporting KC’s Marcel de Jong provided the scoring for Canada.

Six different Canadians earned their first caps, including Vancouver’s Residency duo Marco Bustos and Kianz Froese. Froese started and played the full 90 minutes, while Bustos played 19 minutes as a second half sub. Fellow Whitecaps FC Residency graduate Sam Adekugbe also played 37 minutes as a second half sub. This was Adekugbe’s second appearance for the senior national team.

Canada’s Olympic dream comes to an end

Highlights: 10-men Canada fall 2-0 to the U.S.

Canada’s U-23 side fell 2-0 to the U.S. in the third-place game of the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament – the U.S. scored both goals after Canada went down to 10 men.

Whitecaps FC striker Caleb Clarke started for Canada and played the full 90 minutes.

The U.S. will now face Colombia in a one-game playoff for the final Olympic berth, while Canada will have to wait another four years.

Waston goes 90 for Costa Rica in 1-0 win over U.S.

Whitecaps FC centre back Kendall Waston got the start for Costa Rica as the Ticos earned a 1-0 win over the U.S. in a friendly at Red Bull Arena. Making his third appearance for the Ticos, and first since 2013, Waston went the full 90 and helped limit the U.S. to just four shots.

The 6-foot-5 centre back had three interceptions and four clearances. He also picked up a late yellow card.

Mattocks, Reggae Boyz fall 3-0 to South Korea

Across the pond, Jamaica suffered a 3-0 loss to South Korea in a friendly at Seoul World Cup Stadium. Whitecaps FC striker Darren Mattocks, who had scored a goal in each of his last four appearances for Jamaica, started and played 85 minutes.
